"The Five Cs"

     In the world language teaching , language teachers and experts generally believe that the purpose of learning any foreign language is to communicate, understand the target language cultures, concepts and ideas. "The Five Cs"--- These standards describe the content of world language learning and form the core of standards-based instruction in the world languages classroom.
   1. Communication
   The communication standard stresses the use of language for communication in "real life" situations. It emphasizes "what students can do with language" rather than "what they know about language." Students are asked to communicate in oral and written forms, interpret oral and written messages, show cultural understanding when they communicate, and present oral and written information to various audiences for a variety of purposes.
   2. Cultures
   Cultural understanding is an important part of world languages education. Experiencing other cultures develops a better understanding and appreciation of the relationship between languages and other cultures, as well as the student's native culture. Students become better able to understand other people's points of view, ways of life, and contributions to the world.
   3. Connections
   World languages instruction must be connected with other subject areas. Content from other subject areas is integrated with world language instruction through lessons that are developed around common themes.
   4. Comparisons
   Students are encouraged to compare and contrast languages and cultures. They discover patterns, make predictions, and analyze similarities and differences across languages and cultures. Students often come to understand their native language and culture better through such comparisons.
   5. Communities
   Extending learning experiences from the world language classroom to the home and multilingual and multicultural community emphasizes living in a global society. Activities may include: field trips, use of e-mail and the World Wide Web, clubs, exchange programs and cultural activities, school-to-work opportunities, and opportunities to hear speakers of other languages in school and classroom.
   
   
   The several characters of the teaching in the US.
1. (the social environment )
   The US is a open social, the society’s openness urges the American schools to abandon the old education thought, adopts open policy to absorb all advantages from other countries and establishes diverse and open education control system which emphasizes the actual effect. The US is the biggest immigrant country which has very strong containing nature in the culture. American economy emphasizes on the practical value, matter reward as well as individual value realization with fast development, rich material life, strong material idea and so on. the American advocates the independent way of life and work. The American owns full creative humanities spirit. The innovation is the forever subject in their brains. They pursue the high-tech and prefer to compete.
    2. (the traditional education idea)
   The US’ higher education is considered as the best education in the world. China’s elementary education aims to build the foundation of education with more study and less thought; while the education in the US aims to build such an education to raise the creativity with less study and more thought. Now the Chinese students are generally regarded as talent with few intelligence and high scores. Why causes for such a view? Because the Chinese students study more, actually pay little attention to practice, and cannot study for the purpose of application. Therefore, cultivating the idea of unifying the study and practice is very important for Chinese higher education.
    3. (methods of teaching lessons)
    In the United States inspiring students is great important for teaching. In classroom teachers will specially put forward some inspiring questions for students. In such a teaching mode, the students in the classroom have a higher degree of freedom, and they can be ready to make their own doubt for teachers which made the teaching atmosphere lively and vivid. This method teaching helps to develop students’ abilities of independent thinking and solving problems. However this approach has a high demand to teachers, otherwise, it will easily lead to a decrease in teaching quality and depth.
   4. (the different purposes of education)
    Each national higher education is its economic system reflection and must serve for the economy. The US education aims to adapt for society demand, they explicitly stipulate three big functions including 1. the economic development 2. the scientific research 3. teaching.
   5. (different aspects of inspecting students’ results)
   When American school emphasize more on the ability to analyze and solve questions but not the ability of memory or description. The American students do not need the mechanical memorizing, but display creative thought as far as possible; This can cultivate students’ study interest, raise the ability of doing it by themselves and make the students active and creative. Many teachers will adopt old teaching ways in the Chinese universities, thus take a test which needs mechanical memorizing. Such an inspection method has seriously attack the students’ enthusiasm of studies, causing students one-sidedly to pay great attention to the theory and neglect the ability of practicing.
 6. (What is education and what should do with it?) we do not educate children only for educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life. Education should establish a “people-oriented ”education concepts. Human personality development is a prerequisite for social development and infrastructure. Education should really orient toward modernization, the world and the future, establish a scientific talent values, truly regard students as a principal in the practice of educational reforms, full respect the student’s personality and character, and make students a new generation with innovation capability.
